I'm trying out Picarto for streaming. I'm just drawing a Rudek and the Bear comic right now, if you want to drop in and hang out. Tomorrow at 11:00 I'll start a sketch request stream--all slots are filled, but if it goes well, I'll do more in the future
Anyway, if you're on Picarto, add me to your watchlist!
I know I haven't updated the webcomic in months, but this seemed like a fun way to get back into thinking about that world. Hopefully I'll be able to return to webcomics soon.
So, here are TEN FACTS ABOUT NINA!
Her full name is Antonina Czarnowska.
Nina was born in Warsaw in 1905.
She graduated from Politechnika Warszawska, the Warsaw University of Technology, in 1927, after studying engineering. She was one of only about 300 women to be granted a degree from this school in the interwar period.
After graduation, Nina had difficulty finding an engineering job due to a combination of sexism and the unstable economy. So, she joined the PWK, (Przysposobienie Wojskowe Kobiet), a paramilitary women’s organization that trained women for non-combatant roles in the military. After two months at a PWK camp, her technical skills and university degree had earned her a junior officer’s commission and placement with a miliary unit.
She is assigned as an adjutant to Captain Bzik of the KOP. This means that she reports directly to him, and doesn’t answer to Lieutenant Czerep, the passive-agressive head of personnel.
Nina can disassemble and reassemble a typical two-way radio without referring to schematics.
As the only woman working at the batallion’s headquarters, Nina sometimes finds herself expected to act as a “mom” or emotional support for the male soldiers. She is kind by nature, but resents the expectation to baby grown men.
Because Nina is the radio operator, she often is the first at headquarters to hear important news.
She is secretly dating Corporal Szpadel. If this were discovered she would lose her commission and be seen as a “loose woman.” Szpadel does not know this, but if she had to choose between him and her career, Nina would choose her career.
If you called Nina a “flapper” she would probably laugh at you. Yes, she is sexually independent, she plays cards with the men and isn’t above taking a swig from a vodka bottle being passed around. But she looks at women who bob their hair and go to jazz clubs as silly, immature, and desperate for attention.

So, I'll have to put some thought into what characters I'd like to see facts about Right now, I should get back to work on day-job stuff
As a thank you to the readers of Rudek and the Bear
What? I'll start with quick warm-up type sketches, then I'll take FIVE requests at random from the chat in livestream. If it's PG-13, something not too complicated, I'll try it. Please have reference material on hand--people with links to refs will probably get picked over people without
When? Thursday, July 17, 1:00 PM, EDT. I'll sketch for about 2 hours. Drop in when you can!
If you can't make it, the recording will be posted to my YouTube channel.
