The Cheormhugh is a fantasy species of my own invention, based on my own cat.
The cheormhugh is a little-known cryptid from proto-celtic lore. A six-footed wurm, it dwells in secluded caves, drawn to crystalline aragonite deposits. A very tidy creature, it treads the crystals with its paws, then urinates Spirit of Hartshorn, creating deposits of Sal Volatile, also known as smelling salts. A subspecies, cheormhugh soithargaith, is reputed to haunt silver mines and cause explosions during its hygiene rituals.
Cheormhuigha do not breath fire, but they can cause fires when grooming. The friction of their fierce, tongues on their fur causes electric discharges, which can ignite cave gases.
The cheormhugh sees through darkness, and with its third eye, through the veil of physical existence. Thus many legends have arisen around cheormhugh-seekers who, upon encountering the beast, gain either clarity or madness.
