Rudek and the Bear #73 by PeterDonahue

So... I think my site is down, because I exceeded the bandwidth for the month? Hoping that means lots of folks are viewing the comics, and not that I'm being bombarded by Ukrainian spambots. Anyway, it should be back up tomorrow.

In the mean time, nothing's stopping me from posting the latest comic here! The story of Babcia continues :)

Thanks for reading :3

Rudek and the Bear #72

Well — It’s good to finally post something after a few months unexpected hiatus. I won’t go into details or make excuses, but my son was born two months early, in October. As Lennon said, life is what happens when you’re making other plans — but hey, he’s healthy and thriving, and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. And now that I have a couple weeks off work for the holidays, I am finally catching up with comics and chores and breathing.

So, in this comic, I was having trouble getting back into drawing digitally. For one thing, my hand began cramping pretty badly. For another, I basically had to reteach myself, since I hadn’t worked on the tablet in so long, which is interesting. I ended up choosing to do the final inks on paper, just to get this comic out there before the end of the year. I also tried something I’d been meaning to try — doing background linework in sepia. In the end I think it created more problems than it was worth, though. I kept the backgrounds pretty minimal anyway, so I think it worked out.

On another note, I realized that with “Misza” gone for now, and Szczęściarz out of the picture, I had the opportunity to design a new character. In Żużel and the Fox, there is a wolf character, and I haven’t had much practice designing / drawing anthropomorphic wolves. So, PFC Szczeniak was born.

Anyway — happy to be making comics again. I’m looking forward to pushing the plot forward ;)

You may have been wondering why Babcia is so determined to get across the border...and now you have an answer. But you may have noticed other details throughout the comic as well...

The halberd was pressed against his breastbone...
...but with a steady grip, Pilot Officer Logan Silver held it at bay, though it meant a painful laceration of his left hand. If he could just match strength with the Sieur de Montbert long enough to reach his Webley .38 --

"Go on," sneered the Nazi. "Take your cowardly gun, lowborn pig."

"I'll take it over a pointed stick, any day!"

"Ah, but the Halberd requires finesse, training. You only admit you are no match for my martial skills."

"Damn your martial skills," replied Silver, straining with all his might.

But the Breton nobleman only clicked his tongue in disapproval. "You should know better than to utter curses in a Cathedral."

"If anyone--" he almost had the gun now-- "need fear divine retribution, it's you, de Montbert!"

Oh God, I love your comic, from the side of graphics and characters (this is great - I love your style of drawing); and from the side so to speak I'm Polish history lover, (I like the whole Polish history but also the years 1918-1939), and just this comic stirs in me, my feelings, and patriotic very amuses me because beautiful and amusingly shows us the truth about the Poles, our strange way of thinking and some funny situations, XD - just for me, this is a masterpiece :D

Sorry, please don't be angry but I wanted to ask are you speak or writes in Polish? :)

I had to add you to my watch--you photos of Kraków are awesome, and I can't wait to see how your drawing skills develop. I love your wolf Janosik-type character.

I've found some great IIRP-era films on YouTube, but I haven't seen
"Kraków1920" and will definitely check it out! Thanks for the recommendation :)
